UKFT Member Blackhorse Lane Ateliers Launches Denim Wash Lab
17/04/2023
UKFT Member Blackhorse Lane Ateliers is a craft jean maker based in East London. It was founded in April 2016 by Han Ates, who has over 25 years of experience in the textile sector. From its atelier located on Blackhorse Lane (Walthamstow), it produces and offers selvedge and raw denim jeans.
Blackhorse Lane Ateliers views denim as a blank canvas that can be endlessly reinterpreted and uses its team’s combined experience to create well-crafted garments. To ensure that the quality of its jeans stays unmatched, it combines tailoring innovation and heritage construction while using organic cotton and denim woven in Europe, in an effort to reduce its environmental impact.
R&D Denim Wash Lab
Blackhorse Lane Ateliers decided to create the UK’s first state-of-the-art sustainable R&D washing facility, after concluding that the UK was missing specialists in denim washing and finishing techniques. Set up in partnership with the University of the Arts London, it is based within Blackhorse Lane Ateliers’ factory. It has also been supported by local councils including Waltham Forest, Haringey and Enfield, as well as the London Mayor’s Office.
Underway since 2020 and delayed due to the global pandemic, the project will officially launch on the 20th of April 2023. The denim wash and finishing lab will bring to the UK an expertise that has been lacking in the country until now, while offering a space to develop a unique UK denim aesthetic. In addition, the lab will be accessible to students, start-ups and established brands to explore more sustainable denim wash methods.
