Member Spotlight: Berjoan launches for Spring/Summer 2021
27/01/2021
February 1st 2021 sees the launch of Berjoan, a new British contemporary womenswear label for Spring / Summer 2021.
Designed by founder Charlotte Cameron, who worked with Calvin Klein, Erdem, Burberry and To.ast before launching her label, Berjoan is inspired by Charlotte’s grandmother and the cherished pieces that have been handed down through her family, still worn and loved today.
UKFT member Berjoan is driven first and foremost by the commitment to transparent and sustainable textiles, fully traceable from field to fabric creating a focused collection of daywear. 100% pure British wool is blended from soft but sturdy fleeces from native Bluefaced Leicester and Masham flocks and spun by specialist Yorkshire mill, Laxtons. Finer knits are made from FSC certified viscose and organic cotton spun by a certified zero-emissions Italian mill that only uses fully traceable, cruelty-free fibres from sustainable sources. 100% organic cotton jacquards are woven by a niche mill in France. Corozo buttons are made from the nut of the tagua palm tree by heritage British button maker and fellow UKFT member Courtney & Co. The sustainable management of the trees contribute greatly to the preservation of ancient rainforests in Equador.
The collection is made up of effortless separates inspired by morning rituals; slow dressing, textures and colours of fruits and tablecloths contrasted with the calmness and energy of nature. Spring mid gauge knitwear is produced in 100% British wool whilst a lighter weight fine rib knit with blouson sleeves and wide cuffs is created from FSC certified viscose and organic cotton. Patterned jacquards feature across ankle-skimming dresses, skirts and tie
front tops in 100% organic cotton. The colour palette is neutral with highlights of tea rose, citrine, grapefruit, spring green, dusky blue and shadow.
Founder Charlotte Cameron says: “Berjoan was inspired by my reflection on the emotional attachments we have to those irreplaceable pieces in our wardrobes. The raincoat that has been with you, your mother and your grandmother through many rainy days. That fabulous yet uncomplicated dress that makes getting dressed in the morning simple yet joyful. As a highly textile-led designer, I believe that the fabrics in which garments are made inspire these strong emotional attachments. I wanted to create garments that honour this notion, celebrating the materials, crafts, places and people behind the collection.”
This brand makes some of its collections in the UK.
