Member Spotlight: Specialised Covers explores creating dedicated UK Sewing School

Specialised Covers is one of the UK's leading manufacturers of bespoke protective textile covers, designing and manufacturing premium solutions for automotive, defence, industrial, motorsport and specialist applications. Established in 1981 and manufacturing in West Yorkshire, the firm combines traditional craftsmanship with digital innovation to deliver high-performance products trusted worldwide.

Specialised Covers is proud to be a British manufacturer investing not only in the products it makes but in the future of UK manufacturing itself.

For more than 40 years the company has designed and manufactured bespoke protective textile covers from its West Yorkshire facility, supplying customers ranging from individual enthusiasts to global automotive brands, defence contractors and specialist manufacturers. Every product is designed to solve a unique challenge, whether protecting prestige vehicles, military equipment, industrial assets or highly specialised engineering projects.

Like many UK manufacturers, the firm has recognised that the future of manufacturing isn't about choosing between skilled craftsmanship and digital technology, it's about bringing the two together.

Over the past 18 months Specialised Covers has been investing heavily in digital transformation through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Leeds Beckett University. Alongside this, the company has become active members of organisations including West Yorkshire Manufacturing Services (WYMS), Make UK, Make UK Defence and now UKFT, allowing the firm to collaborate with businesses across multiple manufacturing sectors while helping shape conversations around productivity, innovation and workforce development.

This experience has also led to the creation of Specialised Digital, a new business focused on developing practical AI-powered manufacturing and ERP solutions designed specifically for textile centred SMEs. Rather than replacing people, its goal is to remove repetitive administration, provide actionable operational insight and allow skilled teams to focus on the work that creates the greatest value.

However, one challenge consistently outweighs every technology discussion: people.

There is a rapidly ageing workforce across the UK textile industry, with decades of specialist sewing expertise approaching retirement and too few new entrants replacing those skills. Recruiting experienced sewing machinists has become one of the biggest barriers to growth not just for the Specialised Covers business, but for manufacturers across the sector.

That's why the company is now exploring the feasibility of establishing a dedicated UK Sewing School. Specialised Covers believes the industry needs a structured, collaborative approach to attracting new talent, developing practical sewing skills and creating recognised career pathways into textile manufacturing. Its ambition is to build something that supports the wider industry, not just Specialised Covers, and the firm would welcome conversations with fellow UKFT members to understand whether there is appetite for developing this together.

For Specialised Covers, the future of British manufacturing depends on combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. AI can improve efficiency, planning and decision-making, but it cannot replace the expertise of highly skilled people. Preserving and developing those skills must remain a priority if UK manufacturing is to remain globally competitive.

Specialised Covers said it is excited to become part of the UKFT community and looks forward to collaborating with fellow members, sharing knowledge and helping strengthen the future of UK textile manufacturing together.
