This July marks a remarkable milestone for the SIL Group as CEO Andrew Seal celebrates 50 years in the family-owned textile business, the past 30 years as MD/CEO helping transform a traditional Yorkshire enterprise into an internationally respected textile group with customers and suppliers in more than 50 countries.
Headquartered in West Yorkshire, the SIL Group today employs almost 200 people across multiple UK sites and brings together some of Britain's most respected textile businesses. Its portfolio includes Seal International, MBA Yarns, William Halstead, John Foster, Kynoch, Joshua Ellis, Standeven, Abbotsford Textiles, Roberts Dyers and Finishers (shared ownership) and FTS Dyers. Together, the Group operates a vertical textile supply chain, from natural fibre sourcing and yarn trading through to luxury fabrics, dyeing and finishing. The privately-owned company operates internationally with customers and suppliers in more than 50 countries.

Many of the businesses within the Group have histories stretching back more than 250 years, with several continuing to operate from their original locations. While preserving this heritage remains a source of immense pride, Andrew Seal believes long-term success depends on continually looking ahead.
"Heritage gives us a strong foundation, but it isn't enough on its own," he said. "Every business in our Group has to continue evolving, investing in new technologies, developing modern collections and responding to changing global markets. Respecting our past while preparing for the future has always been central to how we operate."
Andrew joined the business in July 1976, following in the footsteps of his father, Raymond Seal. Although he admits joining the textile trade was never part of a grand career plan, his entrepreneurial instincts and enjoyment of buying and selling made the family business a natural fit.
"I don't think I ever consciously decided to enter textiles," he reflects. "My father actually tried to persuade me not to, but I enjoyed trading and it simply felt like the right place to build a career."
Starting at the bottom, learning the fibre trade alongside his father, Andrew witnessed first-hand the dramatic changes that reshaped British manufacturing throughout the 1970s and 1980s. While much of the UK's textile industry faced significant challenges, the business identified new opportunities through international trade, expanding into Eastern Europe before broadening its global reach.

Among the many decisions that have helped shape the Group's success, Andrew highlights moving to dollar-based trading to better manage international currency fluctuations, investing consistently during periods of growth, and developing a fully integrated textile group capable of competing with some of the world's most recognised luxury manufacturers.
Today, the SIL Group supplies premium cashmere, camelhair, mohair and fine woollen fabrics to some of the world's leading luxury fashion houses, building an international reputation for quality, craftsmanship and innovation.
Reflecting on five decades of leadership, Andrew says his greatest achievement has been creating a business with both resilience and ambition.
"I'm incredibly proud that we've built a vertically integrated group with outstanding brands, talented people and exceptional products. We've grown from relatively modest beginnings into a business capable of competing with the very best in the world, and we've achieved that by never giving in."
While much has changed over the past 50 years, Andrew believes the Group's core values remain unchanged.
"We're still very much a family business. Honesty, hard work, integrity, leadership and looking after our people remain at the heart of everything we do. Those values have served us well, and they're just as important for the next generation as they were when I started."
His own leadership style, however, has naturally evolved.
"I've certainly mellowed over the years," he says with a smile. "Today it's much more about encouraging others to lead. My role is increasingly about sharing knowledge and experience and helping develop the next generation of leadership across the Group."
Looking ahead, Andrew remains optimistic about both the future of the business and the wider textile industry. He believes the sector must continue to modernise its image to attract young talent by highlighting the opportunities it offers from advanced manufacturing and innovation to international travel and working with globally recognised luxury brands.
"The textile industry still doesn't always receive the recognition it deserves as a career," he said. "It's an exciting, innovative global industry and we need to continue showing young people the incredible opportunities it offers."
When asked what he is most grateful for after half a century in business, Andrew's answer is immediate.
"Being given the opportunity by my father."
Asked whether he would do it all again, Andrew's answer is immediate.
"Without hesitation," he says. "I've been incredibly fortunate to spend my career working with so many talented people, not least my brother Jeremy who’s been by myside, never falling out for more than four decades. If I could change one thing, it would simply be to be 28 again."
As Andrew Seal celebrates this significant anniversary, the SIL Group looks to the future with the same entrepreneurial spirit that has driven its success for generations continuing to invest in people, innovation and world-class British textiles while remaining firmly rooted in the family values that have defined the business for decades.
