London School of Tailoring, Bespoke and Couture Tailoring course awarded UKFT Approved status

The UK Fashion & Textile Association (UKFT) has awarded UKFT Approved status to the London School of Tailoring (LST) for its Diploma in Bespoke and Couture Tailoring. Following the technical review, LST has developed a modular delivery structure designed to make specialist tailoring education more accessible to learners with different professional ambitions and commitments. Established in 2009 by Sandra Kotei in Savile Row and now based in Brixton, LST teaches traditional and contemporary tailoring through demonstration, guided workshop practice, feedback and reflection. Learners explore the relationship between pattern, body, cloth, structure, balance, fit and finish.

What is UKFT Approved?

‍

UKFT Approved assesses and recognises qualifications and courses in fashion and textiles designed with industry practice in mind. By approving programmes that meet current skills requirements, UKFT helps learners, employers and training providers identify quality provision supporting career progression and workforce development.

‍

‍

A modular approach to specialist tailoring

‍

Following consultation with the Skills & Education team at UKFT, LST has restructured its curriculum into a foundation module alongside focused garment specialisms. Learners can enrol in a full Diploma qualification by specialising in either Bespoke Menswear or Couture Womenswear or, choose to study individual modules tailored to their specific interests, without the need to commit to a continuous three-year timetable from the outset.

‍

‍

What learners can study

‍

Specialist modules cover trousers or skirts and trousers; waistcoats or sleeveless garments, according to pathway; jackets/coats; and overcoats. Learning includes pattern blocks, grading where applicable, bespoke adaptation, cutting, construction, sewing, fitting and technical evaluation. Advanced modules require appropriate prior practical experience or progression through earlier study.

‍

‍

The modules support learners aspiring to become specialist cutters or makers, and those seeking to improve technical competence for employment, independent practice or further training. Evidence of learning may include patterns, samples, toiles, fitting records, completed garments and learning journals.

‍

‍

Flexible teaching, with practical skills at the centre

‍

LST is developing hybrid delivery for suitable theoretical subjects, including tailoring heritage, cloth knowledge and technical principles. Practical cutting, fitting and garment construction remain studio-based with direct tutor guidance. Across the five modules, the programme comprises 950 guided learning hours and an equal 950 hours of directed individual learning, including research, assignments, learning journals and independent practice: 1,900 total learning hours.

‍

‍

Who can apply?

‍

Applications are welcome from anyone aged 18 or over, including apprentices seeking supplementary specialist training, fashion students, independent designers, career changers and industry practitioners. Applicants are assessed for suitability with advanced garment modules requiring relevant prior practical competence.

‍

‍

Fees and enquiries

‍

Recognising cost-of-living pressures, LST offers a flexible approach to training: learners may enrol and pay for one module at a time, without committing to the entire Diploma at the outset. They may pursue a specific garment specialism or continue progressively towards the full programme. Module-by-module payment is distinct from the proposed discounted full Diploma package fee. Prospective learners, employers and apprentices can email the London School of Tailoring to request a prospectus or book an appointment to visit the Brixton studio and discuss suitable pathways. LST aims to begin the new modular programme on Monday 2 November 2026, subject to enrolment and timetable confirmation. Proposed individual module tuition fees are:

‍

- Heritage and Context (50 guided hours) £750

- Trousers / Skirts and Trousers (240 hours) £3,600

- Waistcoats /Sleeveless Garments (200 hours) £3,000

- Jackets and Coats (280 hours) £4,200
