Textile Innovation Showcase at the UKFT Sustainability Conference 2026: Progress in Practice

The Textile Innovation Showcase at the UKFT Sustainability Conference 2026 on 23 September will bring together a diverse group of companies developing new approaches to some of the textile and fashion industry’s most pressing challenges.

Spanning next-generation fibres and materials, bio-based colour and finishes, textile-to-textile recycling, advanced sorting, AI-enabled design and new manufacturing technologies, the Showcase explores innovation across the textile value chain. Together, the exhibitors demonstrate how developments in materials science, biotechnology, engineering, digital technology and manufacturing are creating new possibilities for reducing waste, moving away from fossil-derived inputs and chemicals, and keeping materials in circulation for longer.

Delegates will be able to encounter technologies at different stages of development and commercialisation, from emerging prototypes to solutions already being deployed within global supply chains.

Amphico

Amphico is a deep-tech materials company transforming how performance textiles are made. Based in London and Tokyo, it develops technologies designed to remove toxic chemistries from two critical areas of textile production: performance protection and colour. Its work combines materials science, textile engineering and artificial intelligence.

Amphico will present two textile technologies: Amphitex™, a PFAS-free waterproof and breathable membrane system, and Amphicolor™, a machine learning-powered colour platform that predicts woven colours from solution-dyed yarns, removing the need for conventional wet dyeing. Together, the technologies are designed to reduce harmful chemical use, resource consumption and production waste while maintaining textile performance and design possibilities.

Arda Biomaterials

Arda Biomaterials is a chemistry company transforming spent grain from beer and whisky production into high-performance materials. Its plastic- and rubber-free materials are being developed for applications across fashion, footwear, automotive, beauty and other sectors.

Arda Biomaterials will showcase New Grain™, a plastic- and rubber-free nonwoven created by restructuring plant proteins to mimic collagen, the protein found in animal skins. According to Arda, New Grain™ emits 96% less CO₂e per square metre than cow leather and 72% less than polyurethane leather. The material can be customised in colour, texture and performance, with the company moving towards roll-to-roll manufacturing for applications across fashion, automotive, interiors and beyond.

Demeter Bio

Demeter Bio is a sustainable materials company developing biodegradable, bio-based coatings for textiles. Combining biopolymer engineering and materials science, the company is focused on creating high-performance alternatives to persistent PFAS-based finishes.

Demeter Bio will present AguaShield, its biopolymer-based textile coating designed to provide simultaneous water, oil and alcohol repellency without PFAS. Developed to work with existing textile finishing equipment, the technology is intended to help manufacturers respond to evolving PFAS restrictions without requiring investment in new production infrastructure.

DyeRecycle

DyeRecycle is an Imperial College London spinout developing technology for recycling coloured and blended textile waste. Its closed-loop green-solvent process removes dyes and finishing chemicals and separates polyester from cotton, creating material that can be returned to textile production.

DyeRecycle will showcase its green-solvent decolourisation and decontamination technology for textile-to-textile recycling. The process converts coloured, blended post-consumer textile waste into clean, spin-ready recycled polyester, alongside recovered dye and microcrystalline cellulose. Designed as a bolt-on technology for existing PET and recycling plants, the system aims to make currently difficult-to-recycle textile waste suitable for new material production.

Epoch Biodesign

Epoch Biodesign is a biotechnology company developing biological processes for circular materials. Beginning with nylon 6,6, the company uses enzymatic processes to break textile and polymer waste down into virgin-quality chemical building blocks that can be used to create recycled polymers for high-performance applications.

Epoch Biodesign will present its integrated enzymatic recycling process for nylon 6,6. Using highly selective, low-energy biological catalysts, the process converts post-consumer nylon 6,6 waste into textile-grade polymer. The technology addresses a material that is valued for its strength, stretch, heat resistance and durability but remains difficult to recycle, with less than 1% currently recycled according to Epoch.

Fab Materials

Fab Materials is a UK materials technology company creating a new outlet for difficult-to-recycle mixed textile waste. Its process converts post-consumer textiles into engineered fibre that can replace a proportion of virgin wood fibre in MDF manufacturing using existing production assets.

Fab Materials will display a finished table made from MDF containing 30% post-consumer textile-derived fibre. The piece demonstrates how low-grade mixed textile waste can be incorporated into a familiar, functional material and processed using conventional MDF sanding, machining and painting techniques.

Fibe

Fibe is a London-based materials science start-up developing textile fibres from agricultural residues, including potato stems and oilseed straw. Its technology is designed to create resilient and affordable natural fibres while making use of abundant agricultural waste streams.

Fibe will showcase natural textile fibres created from agricultural residues. The company has developed mechanical machinery and bio-based processes intended to make fibre processing less costly and easier to establish. Its approach aims to expand the supply of natural fibres, create an additional source of income for farmers and enable agricultural waste-derived fibres to compete with conventional fibre prices.

Matoha

Matoha develops AI and near-infrared sensing technologies for textile waste sorting, grading and fibre identification. Its systems are designed to make material identification and garment grading more accessible and scalable across reuse and recycling operations.

Matoha will showcase technologies including its FabriTell handheld textile fibre identification scanners and S-Bench AI sorting and garment grading stations. Its wider platform includes garment-level tracking, AI-supported grading, data and image integration for inventory and resale platforms, and the development of FabriBot, a modular robotic system for automated sorting of non-rewearable textiles.

Matoha reports more than 900 installations across 60 countries, with its sensing and AI technologies designed for deployment in operational textile sorting environments.

Post Carbon Lab

Post Carbon Lab develops colour technologies for textiles and polymers using photosynthetic microorganisms. Its platform transforms CO₂ into petrochemical-free dyes, pigments, coatings and finishes, combining colour and functionality with the upcycling of carbon dioxide.

Post Carbon Lab will present its Climate Positive Microbial Colours. Produced using photosynthetic microorganisms that capture CO₂, the technology is designed to reduce reliance on fossil-derived dyes while lowering water, energy and chemical use. The colours can be incorporated into existing textile production systems, offering manufacturers and brands a route towards lower-impact colour without replacing established dyeing equipment.

Sages

Sages is a start-up developing phytochemical extraction and biochemical dyeing processes for textile colouration. The company creates bio-based dyes from food waste as an alternative to conventional synthetic dyes.

Sages will showcase its bio-based dyes, produced from food-waste feedstocks through a patented extraction process. The resulting dyes are designed to be non-toxic, non-polluting and biodegradable, with a broad colour range. Developed as a drop-in solution, they can be incorporated into commercial dyeing processes.

SEFF

SEFF is a UK-based technology platform working to expand the use of hemp fibre within the global textile industry. Through its patented processing technology and Global Partner Network, the company aims to increase hemp cultivation and use while supporting lower-carbon textile supply chains and improved soil health.

SEFF will showcase high-hemp-content yarns, fabrics and finished products enabled by its Nano-Pulse technology. The collection spans denim, knits and jersey, woven fabrics, towels, bedsheets and socks, demonstrating the potential for hemp across a range of textile applications. The technology enables hemp fibre to be processed on standard spinning machinery and incorporated at high percentages into soft, climate-adaptive textiles for everyday and performance uses.

Solena Materials

Solena Materials is an advanced textile innovation company developing AI-designed, protein-based fibres for luxury and high-performance textiles. Founded in 2022 as an Imperial College London spinout, the company combines artificial intelligence, protein engineering, microbial fermentation and fibre production to develop alternatives to petrochemical-derived materials.

Solena Materials will present its AI-designed, protein-based fibres. Engineered at a molecular level, the fibres are being developed to combine the comfort and softness associated with natural fibres with characteristics more commonly associated with technical synthetics. Produced through microbial fermentation and wet spinning, their properties can be tailored for different applications, creating new possibilities for high-performance textile development without relying on petrochemicals.

Sparxell

Sparxell is a University of Cambridge spinout developing plant-based alternatives to synthetic colour. Its technology uses cellulose to create biodegradable, dye-free pigments and plastic-free effects for applications across global supply chains.

Sparxell will showcase its 100% plant-based structural colour technology. By engineering plant-based cellulose, the company produces biodegradable pigments alongside plastic-free glitter and sequins. The platform creates visual effects ranging from subtle shimmer to metallic-looking finishes while providing an alternative to conventional synthetic colourants and effect materials.

Tera Mira

Tera Mira is a London-based materials start-up developing seaweed-derived stretch fibres as an alternative to plastic-based stretch materials. Its fully bio-based fibre is being designed to work with existing spinning machinery while providing stretch performance and a different route at end of life.

Tera Mira will present its seaweed-derived stretch fibre, made from seaweed-sourced polymers using a low-impact wet-spinning process that avoids toxic solvents. During its first pilot-scale spinning trial in Manchester in May 2026, the fibre met comfort-stretch requirements at a finer denier. The company is now working to increase fibre strength to meet the processing requirements of existing fabric mills as it moves towards pilot production.

WEFFAN

WEFFAN is a manufacturing innovation lab developing approaches to clothing production that reduce material waste while expanding design possibilities. Its technologies include 3D Weaving, which integrates garment construction into fabric production, and Pattrn, software that applies design-stage waste-reduction principles to conventional manufacturing.

WEFFAN will demonstrate how garments can be woven directly into fabric using existing industrial looms. Its 3D Weaving process merges fabric creation and garment construction into a single manufacturing stage, reducing the material associated with conventional cutting and assembly. Commercialised at scale in Balenciaga's SS26 collection, WEFFAN reports that the process reduced fabric use by up to 42% and off-cut waste by up to 51%.

ZERØTEC

ZERØTEC develops AI-powered pattern design and nesting software for fashion designers and manufacturers. Its patented CAD/CAM platform is designed to reduce material waste before fabric is cut, while providing greater visibility of the environmental impact associated with garment production.

ZERØTEC will present its AI-powered pattern design and nesting software. By optimising the way pattern pieces are designed and positioned, the platform can reduce fabric waste by up to 15%, according to the company. Improved material efficiency can help manufacturers lower production costs and carbon emissions while giving brands greater insight into the environmental impact of individual garments.

Zori Tex

Zori Tex develops high-precision technology for identifying fibre composition and contaminants in end-of-life textiles. Designed for textile sorters, recyclers and other supply-chain partners, its system supports material identification and decision-making for complex post-consumer blends.

Zori Tex will showcase its conveyor-based fibre and contaminant identification technology. The system identifies and quantifies fibres and contaminants, including low levels of elastane that can affect recycling outcomes. Potential applications include feedstock profiling, sorting, quality control and recycling-route selection. Zori Tex is now scaling the technology for the speed and throughput required by high-volume textile operations.
