Member Spotlight: House of Cheviot crafting luxury socks in Hawick

House of Cheviot is a small business based in Hawick, Scotland's historic knitwear town. The team of 19 people combines years of expertise, craftsmanship and design to create luxury socks people love to wear. From the Borders mill to stockists around the world, passion and care are stitched into every pair.

Founded in 2002, House of Cheviot began when James Wright, a Yorkshireman with a passion for textiles, came to the Scottish Borders with a simple ambition: to create beautifully crafted socks in Hawick, a town renowned for its rich textile heritage.

From the very beginning, it believed in doing things properly. As a small team, it takes great pride in the time, care and attention to detail that go into every pair we produce. Much of what it does still relies on the expertise of skilled makers whose craftsmanship and experience are evident at every stage of production.

As the business has grown, so has its collection. Today, it produces luxury kilt hose, country socks, walking socks and everyday styles, all designed with exceptional comfort and lasting quality in mind. It has also become known for introducing bold colours and distinctive patterns, bringing fresh character to traditionally classic products.

While its roots remain firmly in Hawick, House of Cheviot socks are now worn around the world through a network of international stockists. Alongside this growth, its made a conscious effort to showcase the craftsmanship behind every pair, from the knitting machines in our Borders mill to the finishing touches that complete each product. It believes it is important that customers understand the skill, care and people behind what House of Cheviot makes.

A particular milestone for House of Cheviot has been serving as the official sock supplier for Team Scotland's ceremonial wear at the Commonwealth Games since 2014. Seeing products made by its team worn on the international stage is a source of immense pride and demonstrates what Scottish manufacturing can achieve through dedication, quality and craftsmanship.

Everything it does comes back to a simple principle: making exceptional socks with care, attention to detail and a genuine passion for the product. From Hawick to customers across the globe, House of Cheviot are proud to continue Scotland's textile tradition while bringing its own contemporary approach to luxury sock making.

Here is what House of Cheviot said about joining UKFT membership:

We originally joined UKFT for support with the ever changing compliance and regulatory side of the industry, which is a real challenge for a small team like ours. What we did not expect was just how much support and how many resources are available from the friendly team, who clearly care about the textiles industry and protecting British made products as much as we do. As Katie from UKFT says, “there is power in the collective”, and that really resonates with us. We are proud to be part of that collective and to have that support as we continue to grow.
