Why Do You Need a Licence?

In many countries around the world, it is a regulatory requirement to include care instructions on textile products. Even in regions where care labelling is not mandatory, providing clear care guidance is strongly recommended to support customer satisfaction, product longevity, and brand reputation and supports businesses to reduce consumer returns and consumer complaints.

The GINETEX care symbols are an internationally recognised system used across global markets. These symbols offer a universal, language-free method of communicating care instructions, eliminating the need for written translations, and reducing the risk of misinterpretation.

The GINETEX care and Clevercare symbols are protected by international trademarks registered in over 80 countries, including the UK and many markets globally. These symbols may not be reproduced or used without a formal licence agreement. UKFT is the exclusive UK representative of GINETEX, authorised to issue licences and ensure correct usage. Licenses are not transferable and each company must have its own to avoid trademark infringement.

What’s Included in UKFT’s Care Labelling Licence and Support Package?

UKFT Plus members (an enhancement to core membership) and UKFT Retail Partners receive an annual licence to use the GINETEX care and Clevercare symbols. This licence grants the right to apply the symbols across product labels, packaging, printed materials, and digital platforms.

The package includes:

• Licence to use GINETEX care and Clevercare symbols on all labels and media
• Expert support on global labelling regulations, including care labelling, fibre content, country of origin, and flammability
• Access to UKFT’s translation library for standard care instructions across multiple languages
• The latest GINETEX Technical Manual, detailing correct symbol usage, textile testing standards, and labelling principles
• Tailored care labelling reviews to ensure compliance with international regulations
• Ongoing updates and alerts on labelling and regulatory changes worldwide

Why UKFT?

In the UK, UKFT is the official organisation appointed by GINETEX to issue licences and uphold correct usage standards. These symbols are either recommended or legally required in most global markets, and UKFT supports a wide range of UK brands and retailers in ensuring their labelling meets the regulatory requirements of the countries they sell into.

Please note: GINETEX licences are non-transferable. Each company must hold its own licence to avoid trademark infringement. UKFT’s Membership Plus package includes this licence, along with comprehensive support for international labelling and regulatory compliance.
