Session 2 | Measure – Part 1: Understanding TNFD Metrics: What Businesses Are Measuring and Realistic Starting Points

Date:
20 January 2027
Time:
11am - 12.30pm
Location:
Online

Having explored how businesses can assess their relationship with nature, the second session will focus on measurement and data. The session will provide an overview of the TNFD metrics architecture and explore how businesses can use nature-related metrics to better understand, manage and communicate their progress. Recognising that organisations are at very different stages of maturity, the session will focus on realistic and proportionate starting points rather than expecting businesses to establish entirely new data systems immediately. Participants will explore how existing sustainability, climate, supply-chain and operational data can provide a foundation for nature-related measurement.

‍

The session will also look at examples of metrics being used across the Apparel, Accessories & Footwear sector, alongside common challenges including data availability, data quality and supplier engagement, and lessons emerging from early adopters. Facilitated peer-to-peer discussion will provide an opportunity for members to share the challenges they are encountering and discuss practical approaches to building an internal framework for collecting decision-useful nature data.

‍

By the end of the session, participants should:

  • Understand the TNFD metrics architecture and its application within the Apparel, Accessories & Footwear sector.
  • Understand what information they may already hold that could support nature-related assessment and measurement.
  • Learn from peers working through similar data and reporting challenges.
  • Better understand common challenges around data availability, quality and supplier engagement.
  • Identify realistic next steps for improving the quality, coverage and usefulness of nature-related data.

Green Finance Institute

The Green Finance Institute (GFI) works at the intersection of the public and private sectors to identify and unlock barriers to investment in the transition towards a greener economy. GFI's nature work supports the development of approaches that help businesses and financial institutions better understand nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities and translate these into decision-making.

Within the UKFT Nature Working Group, GFI will lead the first two sessions, supporting members to understand and practically apply the TNFD LEAP approach before establishing the foundations for nature-related measurement through metrics and data.

‍

OUR PROGRAMME: ASSES → MEASURE → ACT

The Nature Working Group (NWG) will initially run across four dedicated sessions, taking members through a practical progression from understanding and assessment, through two stages of measurement, to practical action: To support members on this journey, UKFT has established the UKFT Nature Working Group, in partnership with the Green Finance Institute (GFI) and Biodiversify.

‍

‍01 — ASSESS: Understand your relationship with nature

Use the TNFD LEAP approach to identify where your business and value chain interact with nature and begin assessing dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities.

‍

02 — MEASURE: Understand what to measure

Part 1 – Metrics & Data

Explore TNFD's metrics architecture, what businesses are currently measuring and how existing sustainability and supply-chain data can provide a realistic starting point for nature-related measurement.

‍

03 — MEASURE: Put data and tools into practice

Part 2 – Tools & Application

Build on the foundations established in previous sessions by exploring practical, freely available tools that can help businesses investigate nature-related risks, dependencies and impacts across sourcing locations, materials and supply chains, and turn data into useful insights for assessment and decision-making.

‍

04 — ACT: Turn insight into implementation

Bring together the learning from across the programme and translate assessment, data and insights into prioritised actions, targets, governance and a practical nature roadmap.

‍

This registration is for members who have enrolled in the Nature Working Group. If you have not yet enrolled but would like to participate, please contact sustainability@ukft.org.

As this is an interactive working group delivered across four sessions, recordings will only be shared with enrolled participants.
