Preston-based Windrush Festival is looking for volunteer fashion design students to support a new fashion show which will take place on 22 June 2025. More information below.
The Windrush Festival is a cross-cultural and family-orientated festival based in Preston, Lancashire. The annual one-day event was set up to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of West Indians who came to England to help rebuild Britain after the Second World War.
Adrian Murrell, Director and Co-Founder of Windrush Initiatives CIC, said: “Windrush Initiatives CIC decided 12 years ago that we should show appreciation to our elders, parents, grandparents and in some cases great grandparents for their contribution and sheer courage to make their home here despite all their adversities. This was long before the ‘Windrush Scandal’ and ‘National Windrush Day’ ”.
The festival attracts 5,000 people each year coming from Sunderland, Leicester and Manchester, said Adrian. He explained: “Despite no funding or little funding each year, we’ve continued to show respect to our elders who have now embraced this as their event of the year that they look forward to.”
“We celebrate with live music from our local Reggae Band Zamaica, DJs, Caribbean food and cuisine from all over the world, children’s activities and health and wellbeing stalls targeted to community members, manned by community partners.”
The 2025 edition of Windrush Festival will take place on 22 June 2025. It will feature its first fashion show inspired by the 70’s fashion, celebrating the Windrush generation who came to the UK 77 years ago.
Adrian said: “The Windrush Festival will also feature artwork, stories and live storytelling, focusing on the Windrush generation and their integration into UK society.
This will encourage greater education and understanding between the Caribbean community and other ethnicities and the great grandchildren and grandchildren that were unfortunate not to have met their relatives.”
Windrush Festival is looking for volunteer fashion design students to bring to life the festival’s fashion show for June 2025. If you are interested, contact Adrian Murrell, Director and Co-Founder of Windrush Initiatives CIC, at blackeducationtraining@hotmail.com
