Member spotlight: Men’s waistcoat brand Weskit features beautiful British fabrics

10/06/2024

UKFT member EdNerat has formed sub-brand Weskit to produce and sell mens waistcoats from short-ends. Weskit was created out of a desire for well-made, well-fitting waistcoats made in beautiful textiles and made possible by happenstance and persuasion.

Weskit creates British waistcoats that are individually cut and impeccably made. The waistcoats are made to order and are cut to customers’ preferred lengths and widths, in their chosen cut, and with the cloth, lining and buttons of their choice. Weskit offer repairs and replacement linings.

Weskit was conjured out of a desire for well-made, well-fitting waistcoats made in beautiful textiles and made possible by happenstance and persuasion. Weskit’s parent, EdNerat makes coats out of British textiles. As EdNerat set about its business, it became evident that the tailors behind its coats would, on occasion, end up with short-ends.

The short-ends from EdNerat were the starting point, but Weskit was born for more. Sticking to the “well made’ and “woven here” principle of our parent, we set out to source an interesting range of tweeds, flannels and linens from a host of makers around the British Isles, expanding EdNerat’s already healthy range in the process.

The flannels are sourced from the Fox Brothers in Somerset and from AW Hainsworth in Yorkshire. The Harris Tweed hails from Carloway Mill, and the other mainstay for tweed is the Lovat Mill in Hawick. The Weskit range also features linens from Country Antrim and wools from Huddersfield.

Between the conception of Weskit and its debut, we had our share disappointments and set-backs. Our tailors urgently needed work, but our patterns were not production ready. Several of the weavers we had in mind were acquired and their production moved offshore; others were closed down; a third set purported to be weaving here but weren’t. The more we learnt, the more urgent it became to source from British makers – and only British makers.

What also became clearer and clearer to us was how important it was – is – to showcase the supply chain. Not just with beautiful photography, sustainability-conscious platitudes, and heart-warming words – but by crediting everyone along the way. We, like our parent EdNerat, take care to do so – giving full visibility to everyone from our tailors, to our boxmakers

Weskit is now live, with a few private events preceding a small stand at the Cowdray Gold Cup in July and a larger one at Blenheim Horse Trials in September.

Like our parent, we are always keen to hear from any shows and British makers (weavers, knitwear, shoes and more) who would like to collaborate with us.”

Weskit on becoming of member of UKFT: Being part of the UK fashion and textiles industry is really important to us and UKFT’s leadership of the industry is crucial. The expertise, support and …. boring, but vital legal stuff is hugely helpful. We couldn’t do what we do without it!”
