Code of Conduct template available for UKFT members

08/07/2025

UKFT has created a new Code of Conduct Template for fashion and textile businesses to define the ethical, social and environmental expectations they place on themselves, their employees, suppliers and business partners. This document, which is available exclusively for UKFT members, is designed as a general guide to support companies in developing their own, tailored Code of Conduct that reflects their values, operations and business relationships.

Every company is different. That’s why this template is not a prescriptive, one-size-fits-all document. Instead, it provides a structured starting point, highlighting common components and best practices, while allowing members the flexibility to shape the content to reflect their organisations’ priorities, operations and the countries in which they operate.

A Code of Conduct plays a vital role in setting out a company’s ethical expectations and working standards. It applies not only to internal teams but also to business partners and suppliers. By clearly outlining what is expected, and the potential consequences of non-compliance, it helps strengthen business relationships, mitigate risks and build trust with stakeholders.

What’s included in the template:

  • Key clauses and what they mean
  • Suggestions on what to include and define within scope
  • Guidance on due diligence and compliance
  • Explanation of the role of the business and suppliers’ responsibilities
  • Information on third-party ethical and social audits
  • Classification types (e.g., good practice, minor, major, critical, zero tolerance)
  • Tips on how and when to review and update a Code of Conduct

A Code of Conduct can take many forms, from a short statement to a detailed, illustrated document. It could be called a “Code of Ethics” or a “Code of Practice.” There is no legal requirement in the UK for what a Code of Conduct should look like, but there are many internationally recognised standards that companies can align with.

Please note that this template does not account for all local laws and ratified conventions. Neither UKFT nor the template author can assume legal liability for how the document is used. Companies are responsible for ensuring that the content they include is aligned with their actual practices and obligations.

Members can also explore associated resources including:

  • Sustainability 101, Issue 1: A guide to standards and certifications
  • Sustainability 101, Issue 3: A guide to human rights and environmental due diligence in fashion and textile supply chains

This template is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting members with practical tools and guidance to navigate evolving expectations around sustainability, ethics, responsibility and compliance for UK fashion and textile companies.
