UKFT’s Sustainability 101 Issue 5 – Decarbonising fashion & textiles: A guide to energy, carbon and climate
12/01/2026
UKFT has launched the fifth and final issue of our first Sustainability 101 series. This issue focuses on decarbonisation, helping UK fashion and textile businesses understand and take practical action on energy use, carbon emissions, climate risk and the evolving regulatory landscape. It supports organisations at every stage of their sustainability journey, offering clear tools, frameworks and step-by-step guidance to measure emissions, set targets, comply with legislation and embed climate action into wider business strategy.
Highlights of the guide include:
- An overview of the energy, carbon and climate challenges facing the fashion and textile sector, including its contribution to global emissions.
- Clear guidance on measuring greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3), setting science-based targets and tracking progress towards net zero.
- Insight into current and emerging UK, EU and global energy, carbon and climate regulations and reporting requirements relevant to the sector.
- Practical steps, tools and frameworks to help businesses integrate decarbonisation into their wider strategy, supported by resources, case studies and a clear roadmap for action.
The Sustainability 101 series, Volume 1, has been developed to support and guide the sustainable development of fashion and textiles in the UK. As the sector faces growing environmental, social and economic challenges, understanding sustainability is no longer optional, it is essential for long-term resilience and competitiveness.
These guides are available exclusively to UKFT members. To learn more about membership, please visit ukft.org/membership.

Our members have highlighted that decarbonisation can be a complex area, and many have expressed interest in additional learning support. Please complete our short poll to let us know whether a dedicated learning programme would be of interest.
As Sustainability 101 – Volume 1 comes to a close, we are pleased to announce that Volume 2 will focus on fashion and textiles’ relationship with nature. This upcoming series will explore topics such as biodiversity, regenerative agriculture, deforestation and water stewardship.
The Sustainability 101 guides are just one of the many initiatives UKFT delivers on behalf of the sector and its members. If you are a UKFT member and would like to receive a copy of this guide, please contact info@ukft.org.
