Member Spotlight: OTK Studio launches first sustainable line of cocoon jackets
10/10/2022
UKFT member OTK is a brand that carries a strong commitment to people and to the planet. It promotes a conscious and honest way of living that does not only involve being kind to ourselves, but also to our surroundings. In fact, the very letters shaping its name convey this idea. O, K and T stand for “to open a kimono”. Margaux Lunt, director of OTK, explained:
“It means that someone is revealing their inner workings and ideas with honesty and openness. The brand’s interpretation of it is to offer a traceable, conscious supply chain for garments that allow the wearer to feel comfortable in their own skin.”
Sustainable Collection Launch
OTK is launching its first collection of sustainable cocoon jackets today, Monday the 10th of October. Created in collaboration with Belgian artist Sophie Whetnall, it includes limited-edition prints that are elegantly hidden in the jackets’ lining. A serial number has been hand-stamped on each piece to further merge the boundaries between art and fashion.
The collection will be available online and temporarily, from the 10th to the 15th of October, at a pop-up store located in Marylebone, London.
Merging Art and Fashion
Collaborating with artists is a way for the brand to turn its designs into a deeper form of expression. At the end of the jacket’s life, the brand also offers its customers to frame the printed lining to display it as an artwork. Beyond bringing art and fashion closer together, repurposing part of the product encourages circularity. Margaux Lunt said:
“By merging art with fashion, OTK wants to find ways to engage in a more meaningful and mindful way of life – to encourage valuing what we have and caring for what we own.”
Sustainability
OTK aims to help make the fashion industry more sustainable, as the brand is firmly committed to having a better impact on people and on the planet. Margaux Lunt outlined what steps OTK is taking to align with its core values:
“TRACEABILITY – by mapping the provenance and calculating the impact of their material sourcing and manufacturing.
NATURAL, ORGANIC & RECYCLED MATERIALS – products are carefully selected, made of virgin wool, organic cotton, animal welfare certified feathers, recycled polyester and organic cashmere.
CERTIFIED PARTNERS – by prioritising third-party certified suppliers and manufacturers.
LOW WASTE – through production waste management and sustainable packaging.
SMALL PRODUCTION – 150 jackets manufactured.
CIRCULARITY – by offering customers the possibility to frame the print in the lining at the end of their jacket’s life to display as a piece of art. All remaining fabrics are recycled accordingly.
PHILANTHROPY – 2% of OTK’s proceeds go to the Workplace Foundation, a charity that supports emerging and commercially under-represented artists.”
