Member Spotlight: Irregular Sleep Pattern bedding and sleepwear “for sartorial extroverts”
15/04/2021
Irregular Sleep Pattern is a new purpose-driven brand of bedding and sleepwear “for sartorial extroverts” run by the designer Mil Stricevic, graduate of the Royal College of Art, and Jolene Crawford, a former TV producer. Mil says, “Jolene and I love having fun with fashion and interiors, and like many other people also care about how things are made, but when it came to bedding and sleepwear couldn’t find anything that reflected our sense of style, and so Irregular Sleep Pattern was born.”
The brand’s USP is oversized bold prints and eye-popping colours applied across their product range, which is currently a genderless tailored pyjama suit, that also works as daywear, and a reversible duvet set with ‘two moods’ for the price of one.
The pyjama suit, which combines the aesthetics and build quality of workwear with a hint of sartorial elegance, took many months of development to get right, with each detail being painstakingly considered. The jacket features a rounded shawl collar, and a boxy loose fit with generous pockets and side vents for relaxed movement. The pyjama suit trousers have carrot shaped legs, slightly cropped at the ankle, and a drawstring waist for a great fit. With side pockets and darts in the back to give a tailored fit over the bottom, the trousers feature a high waistband designed to sit at the small of the back, making them both comfortable and flattering. Using organic cotton, twin needle construction and French seams, these products are built to last.
The launch collection consists of three patterns each in two colourways, designed by Mil. The Cimex Print is the brand’s first artist collaboration and features Cimex Lectularius (the common bedbug) drawn by the Glasgow based artist Annabel Wright, then ‘overprinted’ onto an equally outsize geometric motif.
The ‘Irregular’ in the brand’s name is not only a reference to their unusual designs and colours, but is representative of how they want to operate as a business. From celebrating diversity through the models on their website, to being a brand that has a voice and opinions on social media, the duo believes in going out-with the mainstream way of doing things. Similarly, Mil and Jolene love fashion but not what the fashion business does to people and the planet, which is reflected in how they produce their goods: they are not following conventional fashion ‘seasons’ but rather refreshing their offering when it suits them, the pyjama suits are cut for minimal waste, they ship their scraps back and have a project in development in Glasgow to turn them into neck ties and cushion covers, and all packaging including the garment bags is compostable.
“We know there is a strong overseas appetite for Scottish brands with a good story”, says co-founder Jolene Crawford, “and our hunch that there was a gap in the market for fashion forward pyjamas, and duvet sets that create ‘art for your bed’ has definitely been validated as we are sending our goods all over the world, building a fabulous and joyful global tribe of irregular sleepers!”
