Bedstraw + Madder is a new British label making super soft knickers that are 100% plant dyed without the use of chemicals.

Our skin is the largest organ in our body; contact with fabrics dyed synthetically triggers allergic reactions, skin irritation and can increase the risk of cancer. Bedstraw + Madder is taking a more conscious approach with a knicker made from the world’s first carbon neutral fibre, Micro Modal® from Lenzing which is produced in an eco award-winning closed loop system that maintains 95% of emissions. This super soft fabric is made from beech wood pulp, which uses up to 20 times less water than cotton and is sourced exclusively from FSC certified forests in credible forest certification programs. Modal fibres are certified as biodegradable and compostable under home or marine conditions. The factory plant dyes all their textiles with zero chemicals and 100% natural colours in a bid to reduce the negative impact of textile manufacturing and revive ancestral natural dye plant techniques.

Co-Founder Primrose Matheson, a former Naturopath and founder of challenger health food brand Primrose’s Kitchen says: “Plant dyes have been used for thousands of years for health benefits: anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and hypoallergenic. We feel that now is the time for us to reconnect to nature and this ancient Ayurvedic wisdom.”

Co-Founder Vanessa Barker who has worked in the fashion industry for over 15 years and long been banging the sustainable drum says: “I think it’s fair that people are given the truth about the environmental cost of the textile and fashion industry. Then they can make up their own minds. Half the time it’s just that people don’t know and we all lead busy lives so it isn’t necessarily a priority.”

The first collection comes in a pretty vintage pink colour called ‘Madder Rose’ which is plant dyed with madder root with a guaranteed promise that all colours are achieved 100% naturally without the use of chemicals. Packaging is made in the UK from recycled card and eco inks. Zero plastic is used.

Bedstraw + Madder will be collaborating with The Lady Garden Foundation in May for International Women’s Day to raise awareness for cervical cancer with 50% of profits being donated.
