Opportunity for fashion and textile design students: Applications open for MADE IT bursaries

Applications are now open for the UKFT MADE IT bursaries. If you are a second-year (Level 5) student currently studying BA/BSc Fashion Design, Textile Design, Fashion/Textiles Technology, or related courses at a UK institution, this is a great opportunity for you to gain hands-on industry experience and take your career to the next level.

What are the MADE IT bursaries?

Each year, UKFT offers 10 MADE IT bursaries ,kindly supported by the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers and CapitB charity, to talented students in fashion and textiles-related courses. Each bursary provides £10 per hour for a 40-hour week, lasting eight weeks, for a total of £3,200. These internships take place during the summer break and can support part of a longer industry placement or be part of your placement year.

Once selected for the bursary, UKFT will work to connect you with high-quality internship opportunities through our broad network. Previous participants have gone on to successful careers in the fashion and textile industry, and their success stories can be found on our MADE IT page here.

How to apply:

The application process is simple, but competitive, so be sure to submit your best work.

Contact your course tutor: Applications must be made through your course tutor at participating universities. They will guide you through the application process and help you prepare everything you need.

Prepare your documents: To apply, you’ll need to submit the following:

  • An up-to-date CV (PDF or Word document, one side of A4).
  • An expression of interest (PDF or Word document, 200-300 words, one side of A4) explaining why you are an excellent candidate for the internship.

In your statement, make sure to include:

  • What excites you about working in the fashion and textiles industry.
  • Personal attributes you possess, such as organisation, attention to detail, and teamwork.
  • Your career ambitions for the future.
  • An up-to-date digital portfolio (PDF, no more than 8 slides, compressed with a maximum file size of 16MB) showcasing your current work, technical abilities, skills and interests in the fashion and textile industry.

Submit your application:

The application window is open annually from mid-March to the end of April, so don’t miss your chance to apply. Your course tutor will assist you in submitting your materials on time.
