Skopos Fabrics is renowned for providing high-quality flame-retardant fabrics and soft furnishings to the contract market, offering a wide range of printed and woven fabrics. This opportunity provided Lucy with invaluable insights into the contract textiles sector and expanded her skillset in commercial print design.

Through the Drapers’ x UKFT Bursary programme, ten students annually receive financial support, guidance and mentoring to access internship opportunities they might otherwise struggle to afford.

Reflecting on her experience, Lucy was grateful for the exposure to the development stages of new products and scientific testing within the contract textiles industry.

“The experience opened my eyes to the contract textiles sector and scientific testing, and why this is so important in the development stages of a new product,” she said.

During her internship, Lucy was actively involved in various aspects of the design process, including creating her own designs, conducting trend and market research, and enhancing her skills in AVA CAD CAM software. She also gained insights into marketing strategies, creating marketing content such as scheme boards and short videos to showcase products.

Lucy explained how the placement broadened her understanding of the textile industry and its diverse career opportunities.

“Before my placement at Skopos Fabrics, I was unaware of just how big the textile industry was,” she said. “My time here has definitely opened my eyes to so many different careers and options within this industry.”

Lucy’s specialisation in print and surface design was further enhanced through exposure to commercial print design in the contract market.

“The contract market has tested my creative abilities in a different way than I would usually work, and I am grateful for this as it has opened up a new way of creative thinking for me,” she explained.

Expressing her newfound confidence and ambition, Lucy confirmed her desire to pursue a career in the textile industry, potentially within the contract textile sector.

“[Skopos Fabrics, the Drapers’ Company and UKFT] have helped me to confirm that I want a future as a designer in the textiles industry, and this opportunity has inspired me to achieve this,” she said.

Through initiatives like this, students like Lucy are equipped with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the competitive landscape of the textile industry.
