The Innovation in Wool Awards are back for 2022, with a new name (from Wool Innovation Prize) and a prize pot of up to £25,000 awarded across one to three winning project submissions that outline inspirational concepts in new uses for wool.

The Innovation in Wool Awards are awarded annually to the individual(s) who shows the most innovative use of wool in any commercially viable application. The awards are hosted by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen Charitable Trust and The Company of Merchants of the Staple of England in conjunction with the Campaign for Wool.

In addition to the £25k prize, the winner(s) will be presented with a merit certificate, which is awarded at a City Livery dinner, and will benefit from a tailored mentoring program from a Livery member aligned to the project category and business guidance.

Projects should showcase wool in new, inspirational applications which can be either apparel, interior, agricultural, horticultural, medical, novel, industrial or other scientific wool applications. In today’s environment and consideration for the health and well-being of the planet, applications should also consider sustainability as a form of innovation. Project submissions should also consider developing products and re-engineering wool that already exists or classed as waste.

The three principal criteria for assessing applications for the Awards are:

• Relevance to the wool industry and sheep
• Involvement with the wool textile industry in the UK, and other areas in the world where wool textile production is undertaken
• Any further work required to commercialise the innovation must be undertaken in the UK

Relevance to the wool industry may cover fashion and design studies using wool and other textiles, as well as veterinary procedures to improve the health and productivity of lambs and sheep.
