UKFT guide to identifying and classifying reusable vs non-reusable post-consumer textiles
21/08/2025
UKFT has created a new guide to identifying and classifying reusable vs non-reusable post-consumer textiles, which is available exclusively for UKFT members. As part of UKFT’s commitment to advancing circularity and best practice in textile reuse and recycling, this guidance sets out clear definitions and classification pathways for post-consumer textiles based on their reuse potential. Understanding how to sort and direct these materials is crucial for compliance, environmental responsibility, as well as maximising their commercial and social value.
This guidance is intended for brands, manufacturers, reuse merchants, local authorities and sorters who work within the post-consumer textile value chain.
It covers:
- Defining reusable vs non-reusable textiles
- Categories of reusable post-consumer textiles
- Non-reusable textiles
- Why clear sorting matters
- Working with the right partners
It is part of UKFT’s new Reuse & Recycling membership for textile collectors, sorters, graders, mechanical recyclers, upcyclers and recycling innovators, which aims to power the circular economy through partnership.
