An update on government funding for UK fashion and textile businesses
26/03/2025
For several months, UKFT has received enquiries from both member and non-member companies about accessing government grants to support their businesses. This interest appears to have been sparked by advertisements in the press and on the radio promoting the UK government’s GREAT Made in the UK, Sold to the World campaign (Goods do not have to be physically manufactured in the UK), the Export Academy, and UK Export Finance, as well as other government services.
While these resources offer general advice, the UK government rarely provides direct grants or business loans to most companies.
Previously available schemes such as the Tradeshow Access Programme (TAP) and the Internationalisation Fund were discontinued during COVID. The Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), which helped manufacturers with machinery costs and business development, ended even earlier. However, funding for skills and training is still available through various sources (outlined here).
Where grants do exist, they are usually regional and primarily outside London/M25. Some areas offer more support than others. A Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Trade Advisor can check if funding is available for your region or postcode and explain how to apply. In most cases, financial support is focused on technical innovation and sustainability projects rather than standard product development, and funding in these areas is expected to become even more limited.
If you have a Department for Business and Trade (DBT) International Trade Advisor, they can help identify available funding and offer advisory services – most of which are free, though they may require participation in structured programmes and reporting on your ‘Export Wins’ to meet government targets.
In general, the UK government does not fund basic business setup, operational or development costs. However, some regional programmes may have specific priorities where limited support is available.
If you do not already have a government advisor, you can start the process of finding one here.
