Selling to France: French Environmental Cost Label (French Eco-Score) Update
06/10/2025
The Coût Environnemental label is a new environmental scoring system introduced by the French government to promote transparency and sustainability in the fashion industry. The amended version of the Decree No. 2025-957 was adopted and published on 6 September 2025.
The amended decree outlines that the mandatory implementation date for this label from April 2026 has been removed and there is no scheduled mandatory implementation date in the newly published Decree. The scheme is voluntary and if businesses choose to use the label, it applies only to textile clothing products placed on the French market.
From 1 October 2025, brands may choose to voluntarily display an environmental score for their products. If they do, the score must be:
- Calculated using Ecobalyse or another tool that complies with the official methodology
- Declared on the French government portal
While Ecobalyse was and is the recommended tool, other tools may now be used if they align with the methodology outlined in the official regulatory notice. The methodology includes several environmental impact categories and is designed to support transparency and comparability across product types.
UKFT will continue to monitor developments and provide updates if any mandatory timelines or further guidance are announced.
