EU adopts new rules to end destruction of unsold apparel and footwear

10/02/2026

On 9 February 2026, the European Commission adopted new rules under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) to prevent the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear.

The rules aim to reduce waste, limit the environmental impact of production, and support circular business models, creating a level playing field for companies embracing sustainable practices.

UKFT will be producing a guide to support members with complying with the obligations set out in the Delegated Act, as part of its guides and resources for ESPR compliance once the Delegated Act has been published on the Official Journal. An update will be shared with members when these guides can be requested from UKFT.
