Consultation on late payments: tackling poor payment practices

31/07/2025

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is gathering evidence on a UK-wide basis on a package of proposed legislative measures to address late, long and disputed business to business (B2B) payments. The consultation will run until 23 October 2025.

The government is taking action to tackle late payments, which affect over 1.5 million UK businesses and cost the economy nearly £11 billion annually. Measures already introduced include mandatory payment reporting by large companies, a new Fair Payment Code, and the appointment of a new Small Business Commissioner. This consultation outlines further proposals to strengthen the legal framework and ensure prompt payment, supporting small business growth and a healthier, more productive economy.

The proposals aim to improve cash flow through supply chains and support small businesses with payment disputes. The consultation welcomes views from all businesses, trade representative organisations, member organisations and interested parties to the proposals.
