Canada introduces new toxic substances regulations 2025
24/02/2026
Canada has introduced the Prohibition of Certain Toxic Substances Regulations, 2025, which were published at the end of December 2025 and will take effect as of 30 June 2026.
The new rules replace the 2012 regulations and strengthen controls on a number of harmful substances by prohibiting their manufacture, use, sale and import, including in products that contain them. The update aims to remove environmentally persistent and high-risk chemicals from the Canadian market such as certain PFAS, with only limited exemptions. The regulation will affect textile and apparel products if restricted substances are used in coatings or treatments and being placed on the Canadian market.
Businesses supplying goods into Canada should ensure compliance ahead of the 2026 enforcement date. UKFT will provide members further information on this in our upcoming regulatory overview webinar on 24 March 2026 to help members understand the impact on their business.
