Obituary: Derek Rose, founder of Derek Rose
02/09/2025
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Derek Peter Rose, founder and chairman of Derek Rose, on 29 August 2025, surrounded by his family. Derek was central to the success of his company and a leading figure in British menswear.
Paul Alger MBE, Director of International Business at UKFT, said: “Derek Rose was a ‘classic British menswear visionary’. He was a passionate force behind the British Menswear Guild, which was very much the voice of quality British menswear at the time. However, unlike many of his contemporaries, Derek’s hard work and steely determination enabled him to keep the business under family control and secure the future of Derek Rose Pyjamas through the brand that continues to bear his name. He was one of the great characters of the British menswear industry and will be very much missed. Our condolences go to Sacha and Nancy and the rest of Derek’s family.”

Derek took over the family business from his father in the 1950s and guided it to international recognition. A committed advocate for British manufacturing and craftsmanship, he helped secure the Queen’s Award for Export on two occasions. In 1966, he was elected chair of the British Menswear Guild, a role that saw him accompany Her Majesty the Queen at the International Menswear Exhibition and represent British fashion at global delegations.

Derek’s contribution extended well beyond these achievements. He had a deep passion for the clothing trade, valuing the industry and the people and products at its heart. He built strong relationships with mills, manufacturers, agents and retailers, while his vision and insistence on quality helped establish a loyal customer base in more than 50 countries.
Respected across the industry, Derek was regarded as a mentor, a gentleman and a trusted colleague. He believed in the importance of good design, the value of craftsmanship and the principle that success should be shared.
Derek Rose leaves a legacy of integrity, innovation and dedication to British menswear. His influence will be long remembered across the industry he helped to shape.
