Effective immediately: Change to Country of Origin Labelling for South Korea
03/07/2025
The Republic of South Korea has amended its ‘designations of origin’ for labelling and now no longer permits sub-nations as Country of Origin.
No longer permitted:
- ‘MADE IN SCOTLAND’
- ‘MADE IN WALES’
- ‘MADE IN NORTHERN IRELAND’
- ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’
The only accepted Country of Origin for UK-manufactured goods is ‘MADE IN THE UK’ or ‘MADE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM’.
UKFT members can request the correct Korean translation for this phrase, as well as Korean care symbols and other local labelling guidance as part of their membership.
Members are strongly advised to update their labels for South Korea to reflect ‘MADE IN THE UK’, as Korean customs authorities or agents are already rejecting goods that do not comply.
UKFT has asked the UK–Korea trade agreement renegotiation team to explore whether sub-national terms such as ‘MADE IN SCOTLAND’ could be permitted in future. Members will be updated if this becomes possible. In the meantime, please ensure that all UK-manufactured goods entering the Republic of South Korea are labelled as ‘MADE IN THE UK’.
Please note that Country of Origin differs from Rules of Origin. Clarification on these definitions can be provided by the International Business team or Regulatory Compliance team at UKFT. UKFT members can get in touch at info@ukft.org
