Obituary: Angus H Cundey of Henry Poole & Co

14/08/2024

UKFT was saddened to learn that Angus H Cundey, the sixth generation to lead family business Henry Poole & Co, passed away peacefully at his home in Shepperton on 12 August 2024 after a short battle with cancer.

Simon Cundey, his son and Managing Director of Henry Poole & Co, said: “He lived and breathed Henry Poole, built special relationships with clients, and was fond of and proud of the skills of all the staff and of their achievements in making Henry Poole what it is today: one of the finest tailors in the world.

“He was called ‘the Godfather of Savile Row’ as he fought continuously to achieve the Row’s global recognition, its protection and preservation.

“He was the chairman of trade-related organisations such as the FMT in Europe, the SRB and the BTBA. He was much loved by the trade and all the people involved in it, and was honoured with an MBE for his services to the industry. He leaves a legacy and will be greatly missed by all of us. Rest in peace.”

Adam Mansell, CEO of UKFT, said: “Angus was a true champion of Savile Row and British tailoring, a huge supporter of the UK textile industry, and passionate about preserving and developing the skills of the sector. He will be missed.”

Paul Alger MBE, Director of International Business, said: “Angus was always welcoming and friendly, caring and supportive. He never once chided me over the cut of my jib even though our sartorial standards were and still are clearly worlds apart.

“Over the past 35 years it has been my immense pleasure to see Angus for both business and pleasure. Of all the wonderful people I have met on the Row, Angus was always the most welcoming and supportive to me personally and it was always a joy and a pleasure to see him.”

UKFT sends Simon and the family our deepest condolences and is certain that the company is in the best of hands to continue his fine legacy.
