Hat brand Pachacuti will present a selection of over 100 designs of Panama hats next week at Chelsea Flower Show (22nd – 27th May 2023). Scroll down to read their UKFT member spotlight.
UKFT Member Pachacuti is a British hat brand specialising in handmade Panama hats. It has combined Fair Trade, traditional artisanal skills and contemporary British design to create finely crafted, sustainable products since 1992.
The brand’s craft and philosophy are rooted in the cultural heritage of the Andes. This includes the name ‘Pachacuti’ that comes from the Quechua language, meaning ‘the turning around of time, the start of a new era, a world turned upside-down’. The Pachacuti team explained:
“The art of creating Panama hats weaves into the fabric of daily life for Andean Mountain communities. Women weave everywhere – on the bus, walking to the market, on their way to the fields. It is so intrinsic to Ecuadorian day-to-day life that in 2012 UNESCO declared the art of weaving a Panama hat was on its Intangible Cultural Heritage* list.”
Pachacuti’s Panama hats are hand woven using straw organically grown on a community-owned plantation located in a protected bio-reserve in a tropical cloud forest near the Ecuadorian coast. Mark Rogers, Pachacuti’s Managing Director, commented:
