University of Leeds partners with ice cream brand Magnum for sustainable fashion project

13/07/2022

UKFT Education Partner the University of Leeds and the School of Design’s Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour has partnered with ice cream brand Magnum to explore new uses for its manufacturing by-products within sustainable fashion.

Magnum is commissioning a research project with the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC) in the School of Design to look at how the brand can bring to life accessible, sustainable fashion using by-products from its core ingredients.

To promote its first dairy-free Vegan range, ice cream brand Magnum has partnered with luxury Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen to create the first haute couture dress made entirely from cocoa bean husks, unveiling the Magnum Vegan Dress during Paris Fashion Week.

The cocoa bean husks were processed to create a fully organic biopolymer material for the dress, with 3D printed details including copper-coated plant-like body embellishments.
