Linton Tweeds: Pushing the boundaries of tweed with a sustainable focus
27/06/2022
For over 100 years, Linton Tweeds has been designing and weaving couture fabric for the world’s leading fashion houses at its mill in Carlisle, UK.
Carefully sourcing the finest yarns from Britain and around the globe, many of which are redyed or twisted on-site, Linton Tweeds’ fabrics continue to push the envelope of what tweed can be.
Each season, the textile design team craft a trailblazing collection of completely new finely woven fabrics using these yarns in never-before-seen ways.
Its focus over the last few years has been the incorporation of more eco-friendly and recycled yarns into fabrics, as well reducing the carbon footprint.
The company taps into natural underground boreholes as the water source used for washing and dying fabrics. Furthermore, these processes are made to use the absolute minimum amount of water required and recycled water where possible.
Linton Tweeds has invested heavily into new, more energy efficient machinery to weave and finish fabrics reducing the carbon footprint further.
These include a new state of the art boiler which makes use of 15% less energy than conventional boilers and is fed using recycled water. The company has also installed energy saving LED lighting throughout the mill.
The B2C side of the business, Linton Direct, sells fabrics woven using redundant yarn, helping to avoid sending deadstock yarn to landfill.
The constant evolution with regards to designs, the yarns used in fabrics, and the commitment to be on the cutting edge of textile manufacturing, is why Linton Tweeds’ slogan after 100 years in business remains ‘The World’s Most Innovative Fabrics’.
For AW23/4
The Linton design team are constantly researching new exciting, fancy yarns, to carry the collection forward. For the W2023/24 collection the company has increased its use of sustainable yarns (including both natural and synthetic fibres), and after gaining our GOTS certification, this has become a top priority.
Fabrics continue to evolve the Linton look, with the use of novelty yarns, which Linton is well known for.
This new season colour and texture are very important, in fabrics that can be transitional through the seasons. Quality ensures that garments have longevity resulting in less waste. The new fabrics contain a mix of fibres from traditional wools, silks, and cottons to highly innovative, technological fibres.
