Harris Tweed Hebrides: Sustainable fashionable fabrics made with traditional techniques
21/06/2022
From its mill at Shawbost, Harris Tweed Hebrides creates fabric based on a vast range of designs – some modern designs, other traditional heritage designs inspired by the Harris Tweed industry archives.
Inspired by the rugged island landscape and Atlantic Ocean seascape, Harris Tweed Hebrides creates a unique spectrum of blended yarn colours.
The company’s fabrics are STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified which means they are free from harmful substances. All dyes are on the approved list of ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) and compliant with UK and EU regulations, including REACH. The ZDHC’s ‘Roadmap to Zero’ programme was designed to protect the planet by reducing industry’s chemical footprint.
Harris Tweed Hebrides does not bleach its wool; using the fibre in its natural state to create the lightest yarn shades.
Using soft, clean Hebridean water reduces the chemicals required in the production process. The mill has on-site effluent management to minimise the impact of its operation on local infrastructure.
With textile industry colleagues and partner organisations, Harris Tweed Hebrides is committed to supporting innovations in technology and development of initiatives which will minimise the impact of production on the environment.
Harris Tweed Hebrides is proud to have led the revival of a priceless industry and looks forward to a sustainable future for the benefit of generations of islanders, as well as discerning clients around the world. In an age when sustainability is gaining the recognition it demands, the unchanging characteristics of Harris Tweed® are more valuable than ever.
