Developing a Textile Technology undergraduate course

29/03/2022

UKFT is exploring the demand and scope for a new undergraduate course to specialise in textile technology. UK textile employers: Please can you help determine the viability for this kind of training by completing a short survey by 29 April 2022.

There has been no textile technology undergraduate course in the UK for many years and it has become apparent that there is an unfulfilled need within all areas of the textile industry for employees with this background and experience.

(Note: by technologist we mean someone that has studied the technology of the subject as opposed to a technician that would maintain and operate a machine)

Proposal

A new course could be created at a UK university to specialise in textile technology (with the title of such a course to be decided). This course could be a 3 year course or a 4 year course (with a year out in industry) leading to a BSc Hons degree.

Requirements

To make a course viable there are 3 key ingredients needed:

  • Enough students to make the course viable
  • A university prepared to run the course
  • Industry prepared to support the students on the course with placements during the course and careers at the end of the course

To help demonstrate the needs of the industry, please complete the following brief questionnaire. The deadline for feedback is 29 April 2022.
