We are in the business of fashion & textiles. We are the UK voice and meeting place for suppliers of fashion & textiles providing: practical support, export advice, information exchange and a voice - to government - to retailers.
UKFT identified skills and training as one of its three key pillars of activity and in order to further address the needs of the industry in this vital area, UKFT has appointed John West as its first ever Skills & Training Manager.
There is a growing need to ensure that the skills and training requirements of the fashion and textile sector are co-ordinated at a national level; with the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy, the drive to ensure that apprenticeship standards are written by industry for industry, an ageing workforce and the need to establish a new pool of talent.
West’s breadth of knowledge and experience comes from many years on the factory floor as Course Leader for Fashion and Textiles at Burnley College and setting up the Centre of Vocational Excellence for employers in East Lancashire. He subsequently represented the Fashion and Textiles employer base across the four nations for nearly 10 years through Skillfast-UK and Creative Skillset.
John will take up his position at UKFT in April. The position has been generously supported by independent training charity CapitB, providing support and funding within the clothing industry.
